A closely similar model of a sheep was shown in the Stockspring Antiques Exhibition Catalogue, 14th-21st November 2011, Number 76, where it was described as follows:
‘Beautifully modelled, depicted lying down with its legs tucked up, subtly coloured with patches of iron red on its coat, and with a delicately painted face’.
Derby models of sheep usually appear on mound bases, often with bocage, and it is very rare to find a sheep without a base. In the Stockspring catalogue, it was noted that the model shown did not appear to have been previously recorded. Thus it is likely that this sheep is only the second such figure recorded.
Condition: Small area of restoration and chip to tail, and small areas of restoration to ears and hoof. Firing fault in manufacture to leg.
