A rare Bow mustard pot, circa 1752

Finely painted in blue with rocks, pine trees, a small house and scattered boulders with flocks of birds above.

Height:  4.9 cm

Mark:  Painter’s mark to base, possibly a ‘9’, or a ‘J’ or an ‘I’

Condition:  Cover missing, handle lacking, small chip to rim, ink staining to interior

Price:  £395

Bow inkpots are very rare. An example of this shape was illustrated by Simon Spero, 1994, p.19, no. 28. See also Phillips, The Billie Pain Collection of English Porcelain, 26th November 2003, lot 61. The example shown above is painted in a lighter shade of blue and has a creamier body,  perhaps suggesting an earlier date.
