The vase of slender tapered shape, with flattened ring handles, and an inner rim which originally would have supported a cover, now missing.
Finely painted in orange with a classical scene of a battle. A Roman soldier holds the reins of a stallion, and leans over a fallen warrior; a further figure is leaving the battlefield, carrying a pole surmounted with an eagle. The whole scene is surrounded in gilt in an octagonal cartouche, the rear of the vase painted in brown with stylised shapes. It is possible that this vase was painted in the London studio of Thomas Baxter or in Mansfield by William Billingsley.

Condition: An area of the rim has old restoration, approximately 5cm by 1cm, and there are two further smaller areas which show signs of regilding and possibly restoration. There is a long crack to the inside base footrim.
