A Herculaneum Liverpool porcelain cream jug, circa 1810-15

Unmarked

Height 10.5 cm

A Herculaneum porcelain cream jug of New Oval Shape with gilded rim and handle, stylised gilt trailing leaves around the upper body and a gilt border to the shoulder. The centre superbly painted, probably by Samuel Williams, with figures in a rural landscape in shaped panels on either side of the cream jug, the front with a figure painted in grey holding a walking stick, within a pale blue slightly marbled ground.

The painting of Samuel Williams is discussed in detail by Peter Hyland: ‘His highly recognisable, finely detailed landscapes with ”peasant” figures are very frequently found on both tea wares and ornamental porcelains and have become synonymous with Herculaneum bone china painting.’
