A very rare white Bow chocolate cup, circa 1748-50

The cup of twin-handled form, left in the white and applied with prunus sprigs, finely potted with a gently flared rim.

Height: 6.6 cm

Mark:  Small incised ‘R’ to base

Condition:  Very good

Pieces of Bow with the incised ‘R’ mark are rare. Out of six hundred and twenty pieces of Bow formerly in the Ainslie Collection, only eleven had incised ‘R’ marks. It is uncertain as to the significance of the mark, but these wares appear to be early, perhaps post-dating the ‘drab’ or ‘Mushroom class’ wares. For further information, please see:
