The jug of squat, bulbous form with strainer to the spout, gilded outline to rim, spout, handle and foot rim, the front of the jug and lid painted with ‘TOAST & WATER’ in gilt with red shadowing to the letters.
These jugs were produced throughout most of the 19th century. The jug is of typical shape, although most are unmarked. Toast and water was made for invalids, and is discussed by Mrs Beeton in her book on Household Management, 1861.
